Happy Valentine’s Day! On this day of love, we are highlighting food donation organizations in Massachusetts that spread love of food and nourishment in their communities.

Food donation organizations across Massachusetts have effective systems in place to ensure edible surplus food reaches those in need, instead of being sent straight to the waste stream. Through extensive networks and collaborations, organizations such as Food Link, Rachel’s Table, and Spoonfuls distribute fresh, ready-to-eat food within hundreds of communities each year.

Food Donation Organizations Making a Difference

Food Link

Operating out of Arlington and Roxbury, Massachusetts, Food Link rescues fresh, nourishing food from retailers, wholesalers, distributors, and farms, and distributes it to over 100 community organizations throughout Greater Boston.

Food Link is currently powered by a team of 1,000 volunteers who have donated over 30,000 hours of their time to divert over two million pounds of food from the waste stream since 2025. This is equivalent to 1.7 million meals worth of food that would otherwise be sent to different steps of the EPA Wasted Food Scale.  Since 2012, Food Link has rescued over 10 million pounds of food, always ensuring that high-quality food is delivered when and where it is most needed. Rachel’s Table of Western MA collects and distributes surplus food to alleviate hunger across Franklin, Hamden, and Hampshire counties. The organization runs programs that support community gardens for those facing food insecurity, as well as gleaning (harvesting) excess produce from local farms to distribute to area food hubs. Rachel’s Table also facilitates purchasing programs for specific items needed by its partner agencies. Items include milk, fruit (in the winter), Thanksgiving turkeys, and their ESSENtials program, which serves kosher-observing Jewish families. Additionally, Rachel’s Table’s Teen Board works to educate peers about local hunger and poverty issues.

With the power of over 500 volunteers, Rachel’s Table rescued and distributed 987,774.6 pounds of food in 2025! Learn more about Rachel’s Table on their website.
