Keep America Beautiful (KAB), US Composting Council (USCC), and Kimberly-Clark Professional have released “A Guide to Workplace Composting.” This guide provides information on setting up a program to collect organic waste for composting at a range of workplaces such as office buildings, hotels, hospitals, and restaurants.

The check list in the guide includes the 6 C’s:

  1. Confirm the availability of organics collection
  2. Conduct a waste audit
  3. Consider what equipment you need and where
  4. Create employee engagement
  5. Commence the program
  6. Continuation of the program

RecyclingWorks has additional resources to help your business divert wasted food from the trash. If your current waste hauler does not provide organics collection, check RecyclingWorks Find-a-Recycler database to find other potential haulers. RecyclingWork’s Source Separation Guidance provides detailed guidance on collecting food scraps in a commercial kitchen. If you have surplus food, RecyclingWorks provides Food Donation Guidance to help connect that food to people who need it.
