The Barnstable Patriot reported on a recent food waste workshop for Cape Code health officials, waste haulers, composters, businesses, and institutions. The session, led by RecyclingWorks staff Heather Billings, focused on strategies for navigating the Massachusetts Commercial Organics Waste Ban. The ban, which applies to businesses that generate one ton or more of food waste per week, is helping to divert food scraps from the trash.
Billings presented on a variety of topics, including:
- how to estimate food waste to check if a business is subject to the ban
- legal information for food donation from the Harvard Food Law and Policy Clinic
- free assistance from RecyclingWorks to help business and institutions set up food diversion programs.
Attendees identified a need for more facilities on the Cape that can accept diverted food waste since there are currently only two compost facilities.
