BioCycle Magazine recently featured the organics diversion program at Deerfield Academy. This independent boarding school has been diverting compostable waste from their dining hall for years. Recently, the school has been expanding efforts to divert organic waste across the campus as part of an effort to overhaul the campus-wide recycling program. The school calls this effort āThink 80|20ā and the goal is to divert 80% of the waste on campus from landfills by 2020.
Expansion of the organics collection program includes collecting pizza boxes and paper napkins across the campus for composting, switching to compostable coffee pods for single serve coffee, and providing faculty that live on campus with pails for food scraps. The Franklin County Solid Waste District helped support the expansion of organics diversion at Deerfield Academy and four other private schools in the county with a grant from the MassDEP.
RecyclingWorks in Massachusetts, which provided resources to support the Franklin County Solid Waste District, recently featured Deerfieldās organics program in a video case study.
