EcoFellowship positions 2013-2014

The Center for EcoTechnology is seeking qualified college graduate candidates for a one-year paid fellowship position to work with our staff and other EcoFellows to carry out community outreach, school education and other activities related to climate action initiatives and educational programming in western Massachusetts. Activities will support the Center for EcoTechnology’s initiatives to assist residents, students, institutions and businesses across the region related to ongoing programs in environmental education and energy efficiency, home energy services, renewable energy, and waste reduction through recycling, reuse and home composting. The Fellowship offers a full orientation and week-long training by CET professionals in subjects related to above programs, as well as professional development throughout the fellowship. Fellows will be based in one of CET’s locations: Pittsfield, Northampton or Springfield, where they will serve communities in the region.

 EcoFellowship Qualifications:

  • We are looking for creative and energetic college graduates (bachelor degree required) with an interest in education and outreach along with a familiarity with issues related to energy efficiency, renewable energy technologies, climate change, recycling and resource conservation. Previous experience through volunteering, internships and/or professional work is required.
  • Commitment to the entire Fellowship program, from August 12, 2013 to June 27, 2014, is required.
  • Fellows work a flexible schedule (40 hrs/week) that requires some evening and weekend hours as needed.
  • Computer skills required, experience in creative uses of social media and/or web/graphic design preferred.
  • Driver’s license and own reliable transportation required.
  • Ability to lift and move 50# will be required as necessary for certain placements.
  • Background checks will be required as necessary for certain placements.

 EcoFellowship Salary and Benefits:

  • Stipend:  $1,500/month for 40 hrs/week, with an additional $2,000 bonus at the completion of the program
  • Benefits: Health Insurance; paid sick, holiday and vacation; supplies and mileage reimbursement
    • Required holiday break: December 23-27, 2013
  • Professional Development:  Week-long training; monthly professional trainings throughout experience

 Duties and Responsibilities of 2013-2014 EcoFellowship placements may include some or all of these tasks:

Energy Efficiency Education and Outreach EcoFellowship ~ up to 3 placements available in 2013  (based in Northampton)

  • Implement the Go Green Campaign – encouraging residents to take practical steps in home energy efficiency, recycling, composting and personal behaviors towards a sustainable future.
  • Work directly with staff to assist communities with outreach and education to residents. Examples of outreach activities include staffing information tables, coordinating energy efficiency and building science presentations, hands-on workshops, EcoHouse parties and other outreach events.
  • Assist staff in writing articles for community newsletters and case studies for posting on our website, communicating via social media networks and other tasks as needed.
  • Assist field staff in home energy assessments, reviewing residential homes for potential energy efficiency measures and assist homeowners in behavior changes to improve their efficiency savings.
  • Assist field staff in performing home energy ratings of newly constructed homes, including field visits to the homes to inspect energy efficiency measures and assisting builders who seek to build more energy efficient buildings.
  • Monitor progress of local campaigns to reduce waste and energy use in households
  • Compile case studies of EcoAll Stars in communities who have successfully implemented energy and money saving practices in their home.
  • Additional outreach tasks assigned as required by outreach efforts.

Waste Reduction and Recycling Education and Outreach EcoFellowship ~ up to 2 placements available in 2013                                        (based in Springfield/Pittsfield)

  • Implement the Go Green Campaign – encouraging residents to take practical steps in home energy efficiency, recycling, composting and personal behaviors towards a sustainable future.
  • Work directly with staff to assist communities with outreach and education to residents. Examples of outreach activities include staffing information tables, coordinating waste reduction (recycling and composting) presentations, hands-on workshops, EcoHouse parties and other outreach events.
  • Assist staff in writing articles for community newsletters and case studies for posting on our website, communicating via social media networks and other tasks as needed.
  • Seek out businesses and residents to donate building supplies, cabinets, doors/windows and other household items, prepare these products for resale and assist customers at the EcoBuilding Bargains reuse store complete the reuse cycle and reduce household waste.
  • Conduct classroom and school-wide energy, recycling, climate change and environmental science instruction and activities at schools in western MA.
  • Organize special events such as the Youth Environmental Summit, Berkshire Environmental Educators Network conference, Junior Solar Sprint and teacher professional development programs as needed.
  • Assist with the promotion and implementation of Household Hazardous Waste collections.
  • Additional outreach tasks assigned as required by outreach efforts.

Green Business Education and Outreach EcoFellowship ~ up to 2 placements available in 2013                                                                               (based in Northampton)

  • Support statewide Green Team program for schools, including: administrative support to the program, writing communications to teachers- emails and newsletters, recruiting educators, work to bring improvements to the program and provide technical assistance as needed to schools to establish recycling and composting programs.
  • Assist our mercury diversion program, providing support to municipalities and hardware retail take back locations and ensuring these locations are stocked with educational materials.
  • Within the CET Green Team, act as Northampton office’s Recycling Liason and work on Greening CET.
  • Support Green Business Specialists to help implement commercial recycling and composting programs and provide subsequent follow up support to these businesses.
  • Create signage and other educational materials for businesses schools and institutions.
  • Track and organize actions and accomplishments for internal purposes and funding report.
  • Learn energy efficiency programs provided by the utility companies and assist Green Business Specialists with outreach, direct installs, and prescriptive incentives.
  • Additional outreach tasks assigned as required by outreach efforts.

Business Systems Manager – Northampton

The Business Systems team provides essential support to The Center for EcoTechnology’s Home Energy/Green Building Services division for their daily operations and business development.  The Business Systems Manager will oversee employees in the development and implementation of business systems in support of the division’s objectives.  The role acts as project manager and leader for implementation and configuration of new database systems; contributes to the design of core process technology solutions, establishing basic system administration process and protocols. The position also has responsibility for fiscal management within the division and with outside agencies.  The manager will set direction for the IT strategy and fiscal management of this division, and provide leadership and mentorship to staff.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Comprehensive

  • Knowledge of the processes, complexities and possible errors and solutions involved in Business Systems implementation including managing daily maintenance, and user and data security
  • Knowledge of third party applications including related business applications
  • Knowledge of financial and accounting principles and practices
  • Experience with data analysis systems
  • Experience with process and workflow design

Considerable

  • Analytical and organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate with both technical and non-technical audience
  • Knowledge of project management principles and methodologies

Qualifications

MassDEP Green Business Specialist – Boston

The Center for EcoTechnology works with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) on the RecyclingWorks in Massachusetts program. This full-time position will work closely with the Branch Chief of Waste Planning and Commercial Waste Reduction in the MassDEP office in Boston and report to the Green Business Manager within the Green Business Services department at CET.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Organics Diversion Focus:

  • Assist with program analysis, reporting, and measurement for composting and recycling facilities.
  • Provide outreach, education and technical assistance in the areas of food waste diversion.
  • Assist MassDEP staff to engage state-owned facilities for food waste diversion.
  • Develop food waste diversion case studies for target sectors.
  • Potential follow up on needs assessment for food waste diversion from food manufacturers and processors.

RecyclingWorks in Massachusetts Outreach

  • Coordinate with Green Business Services Department and MassDEP on waste ban outreach and compliance assistance
  • Coordinate stakeholder discussions on the increased diversion of carpet, asphalt shingles, and other construction materials
  • Analyze data from facilities handling construction and demolition materials and other recyclables
  • Speak to business association groups like Chambers, Green Community groups and others to promote RecyclingWorks and engage businesses.

General Business Assistance

  • Serve as the first point of contact for businesses in key market sectors.  Engage decision makers for technical assistance services to be provided by other Green Business Specialists as appropriate.
  • Communicate a working understanding of separation and collection mechanisms for commercial generators of various recyclable materials.
  • Respond to businesses, institutions and colleges and universities in the immediate Boston area interested in reducing waste through Recycling Works.
  • Respond to resource management questions via phone and email about environmentally preferable purchasing, disposal, composting and recycling.

Requirements

  • College degree and 2 years of related experience in the areas of solid waste, recycling, and composting
  • Valid driver’s license with reliable transportation
  • Professional appearance and professional communication style in business setting

Desired Qualifications

  • Excellent communication skills: public speaking and demonstrated concise and professional writing skills
  • Strong project management skills including the ability to work independently and in an organized way, ability to track and report results and accomplish tasks within timelines
  • Experience speaking to business owners, facility managers and all levels of staff in a wide range of business types.
  • Ability to convey information in a straight forward unbiased way and adept at helping implement incremental change.
  • Knowledge and experience researching information (online, print and telephone)
  • Work-style – flexible, self-directed, professional, hard-work ethic, patient, works well independently, with others, or as team leader

  • Proficient in MS Office suite, and comfortable with using Excel for data tracking and analysis

The Center for EcoTechnology offers competitive pay rates and a comprehensive health plan which pays approximately 64% of the individual’s health insurance costs.  New employees are eligible for health, dental and disability insurance after 30 days of employment.  New employees accrue 10 days of paid vacation leave per year, 9 sick days and we offer 12 paid holidays.  This position will be a full-time hourly position with benefits based in the Mass DEP office in Boston.
