GreenBiz reports a new collaboration to research and identify strategies for reducing food waste known as Rethink Food Waste through Economics and Data (RFED). ReFED is led by a group of businesses and foundations including Sodexo, Deloitte Consulting, MissionPoint Capital Partners, and the Closed Loop Fund.

ReFED research has identified $165 billion in annual lost revenue in the US due to wasted food. Most of this waste occurs in three places along the supply chain: reducing wasted during procurement, for rescuing prepared food that is not consumed for donation, and diverting food scraps for composting, animal feed, or anaerobic digestion. The groups hopes to identify what investments can be made to substantially reduce waste in these areas.

Sodexo, Food Recovery Challenge participant, already donates surplus food through its Campus Kitchens Project.
