Congressman Jim McGovern spoke on the house floor this month to the importance of reducing food waste. He mentioned the estimated $218 billion per year lost due to the growing, transporting, and disposing of food that is never eaten. WWLP reports on the Congressman McGovern’s statement and the efforts of organizations and institutions in Massachusetts to address this issue.

McGovern highlighted the work  of the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, Food Recovery Network, and Campus Kitchen Project. Many colleges and universities, such as Becker College, College of the Holy Cross, Smith College, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, have set up programs for food donation. RecyclingWorks has worked with many of these schools to set-up diversion programs for surplus and wasted food.
