The Foodservice Packaging Recovery Toolkit is a free resource and guide on recovering foodservice packaging that was launched on April 21, 2016. Foodservice packaging includes items such as boxes, bags, and cups. The Foodservice Packaging Institute is a North American trade association for foodservice packaging industry. Within the institute, the Paper Recovery Alliance, and Plastics Recovery Group were created to address the increasing needs for recycling, composting, and energy recovery of foodservice packaging.
The toolkit provides information for foodservice operators, communities, materials recovery facilities, end markets, and composting & anaerobic digestion facilities. The toolkit also includes case studies highlighting examples of successful food service package recovery.
For foodservice operators, the National Restaurant Association provided their insight and guidance on establishing a program for in-store recycling or composting. The toolkit explains the benefits of recovering the packaging, including cost-saving, reducing environmental impact, and revenue generation. The toolkit is helpful for all industries interested in increasing foodservice packaging recovery.
RecyclingWorks also provides guidance for recycling common materials found in businesses and institutions. The Materials Guidance pages offer guidance on recyclable materials, how to recycle, and what happens to common recyclables. The website also offers information on complying with the Massachusetts Waste Bans.
