The MetroWest Daily News reported on Framingham State University’s effort to reduce wasted food on campus, including source reduction, education, food donation, and composting.
FSU uses LeanPath to track and reduce the amount of wasted food. The university donates edible surplus food to local shelters, and dehydrates remaining food scraps to reduce its volume and weight before hauling to compost.
RecyclingWorks has assisted the university with their ongoing efforts to divert wasted food from disposal.
Recently, Framingham State received an EPA “Food Recovery Challenge Regional Achievement Certificate” in recognition of their efforts. The EPA presented these Food Recovery Challenge Awards to Massachusetts recipients at the WasteWise 2016 Fall Forum on December 1. Last year, the participants in the Food Recovery Challenge, such as FSU, helped to divert over 691,000 tons of wasted food from landfills or incinerators nationwide.
