MassLive highlighted a Western Massachusetts’s campaign to raise awareness about liability protections for food donation. Community members and the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts partnered to raise awareness around the liability protections, specifically educating about the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act. This act provides liability protections for entities that donated their surplus food in good faith.
The campaign ads and designs, which were displayed around Northampton, Amherst, and on several PVTA buses, highlighted the issues of wasted food and food insecurity. This campaign also coincided with National Hunger Action Month. This Western Massachusetts campaign hopes to change the perception of abundance and the need for ‘perfect’ produce.
RecyclingWorks produced Food Donation Guidance to assist businesses and institutions interested in establishing Food Donation programs. The Food Donation Guidance also outlines the logistics, liability protections, and tax incentives for food service businesses interested in establishing a food donation program. This guidance includes a legal fact sheet on liability protection created by the Harvard Food Law and Policy Clinic.
