Food pantries are regular recipients of donated surplus food from business and institutions. RecyclingWorks Food Donation Guidance provides information to help food service entities connect with food rescue organizations to donate surplus food to those who need it.

Like other food service entities, food pantries generate food scraps that cannot be eaten. Recently, RecyclingWorks assisted two local food pantries in Massachusetts with diverting those food scraps from the trash.

Providence Ministries is a non-profit residence, soup kitchen and food pantry in Holyoke. Providence Ministries runs Kate’s Kitchen which provides residents and neighbors with three free meals per day. RecyclingWorks helped Kate’s Kitchen arrange more regular pickups of food scraps with a farmer who uses those scraps for animal feed. Kate’s Kitchen now diverts substantially more wasted food from the trash.

RecyclingWorks also assisted the Christian Center, a non-profit food pantry in Pittsfield. RecyclingWorks provided signage and guidelines for the food pantry staff to construct and manage an on-site backyard compost bin for the kitchen prep waste. The Christian Center plans to use finished compost on their garden.
