The United Nations and other leading international organizations announced the Food Loss and Waste Accounting and Reporting Standard (FLW Standard), a global standard that will help measure food loss and waste. This standard includes global definitions and reporting requirements for countries and companies to encourage the accuracy of food loss metrics and reports.

These standards encourage businesses and institutions to track how much food is wasted in addition to setting a baseline for progress. Creating a baseline for action is key as it pinpoints needs and opportunities for prevention and waste reduction. Standardization of definitions and measurements also allows entities to compare reports and share strategies.

The FLW Standard supports the USDA and EPA goal for 50% reduction in wasted food by 2030.
