The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) is offering micro-grants of up to $5,000 for entities implementing short-term waste reduction projects in the state of Massachusetts. Waste reduction offers greater benefits than recycling, as it reduces both the volume of materials going to disposal and the volume of raw materials used during manufacturing.
Eligible projects will advance source reduction, reuse, or repair in Massachusetts. Preference will be given to regional projects and projects with community-wide impact. Projects promoting recycling are not eligible for this grant, but may qualify for funding through the Sustainable Materials Recovery Program.
Reduce, Reuse, Repair grant funds may be used for project activities including research costs, materials, equipment, signage, outreach/education, event space, event promotion, professional services, and new staffing needs. Funding may not be used for operating expenses for existing programs and services.
Eligible entities include:
- Massachusetts municipalities
- Regional entities such as solid waste management districts, solid waste or recycling cooperatives, or regional planning authorities that are recognized as governmental bodies
- Organizations or businesses (for profit or non-profit) that are properly licensed to operate in the state
Examples of eligible projects include developing a tool lending library, launching a bicycle repair program, hosting local repair events, or purchasing a dishwasher for a school cafeteria to encourage the use of reusable dishware.
