This blogpost from the Union of Concerned Scientists highlights the Federal Government’s recently released Biogas Opportunities Roadmap. This report recognizes the technology’s potential for reduction of waste and production of renewable energy, noting that such systems could potentially power more than 3 million American homes. With our commercial organics disposal ban and biogas energy incentives, Massachusetts provides an excellent model efforts to establish anaerobic digestion facilities throughout the country.

Blogpost author Ken Kimmell served as Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection before taking his position as President of the Union of Concerned Scientists.  As Commissioner, Mr. Kimmell was instrumental in the establishment of the commercial organics disposal ban as well as enhancements to regional carbon emission reduction targets.
