On Earth Day, U.S. EPA New England (Region 1) announced its 2015 Environmental Merit Awards. Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School’s Environmental Club received a 2014 President’s Environmental Youth Award. The Environmental Club carried out an initiative to encourage reusable water bottles and spread awareness of climate change to fellow students, which involved fundraising to purchase two purified water refilling stations for the school.

The 2014 National Food Recovery Challenge New England Award Winners were also announced. In 2013, EPA’s Food Recovery Challenge participants nationally diverted more than 370,000 tons of wasted food from entering landfills or incinerators. Worcester State University was named the National Food Recovery Challenge Award Winner for the College and University category, and Wellesley College received an Honorable Mention in the same category. WasteWise is another U.S. EPA program that helps organizations and businesses apply sustainable materials management practices to reduce municipal and select industrial wastes. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston was named the National WasteWise Non-Profit Organization Partner of the Year.
