Berkshire Community College (BCC) in Pittsfield, Massachusetts placed 1st in the state and 5th in the nation for recycling rates in the RecycleMania Tournament! The college earned this title with a 75% recycling rate. The recycling rate was measured by the percentage of total waste that was recycled and composted over the course of the competition.

RecycleMania encourages colleges and universities to improve waste reduction strategies through an 8-week competition that reports on the amount of recycling and trash collected each week. RecycleMania motivates students to reduce waste, raises awareness about campus recycling programs, and tracks diversion rates across campus.

The Berkshire Community College and its’ BCC Green Team received this recycling rate by reducing the campus footprint and increasing their waste diversion. The Green Team promotes initiatives such as bringing a personal coffee mug and refillable water bottle, and diverting their organics for compost.

Seventeen other Massachusetts colleges also participated in the RecycleMania Tournament.
