recent article on the Sustainable City Network website features three large institutions that have implemented food waste diversion programs. The article describes the logistics and challenges that each institution had to address to collect food waste on a large scale.

One of the featured institutions is Boston University, which diverts food waste from both their dining services and from catered events. Their diversion program includes extensive training, educational signage and materials, high visibility sorting stations, and daily organics pickup from their waste hauler. The program has received very positive feedback. Sustainability Coordinator, Sabrina Pashtan, notes, “Students have told us that it makes them feel good to know that the university is being environmentally responsible and taking action to protect our environment.”
