Martha’s Vineyard is an island that has to ship it’s waste off to landfills and incinerators on the mainland of Massachusetts, which can get very expensive. A large percentage of that waste consists of compostable materials, like food waste and other organics. Instead of being trucked off the island, these materials could be processed into compost through a variety of systems, reducing waste shipping costs and providing residents with high-quality compost for their gardens and lawns. This article by the Martha’s Vineyard Times presents the benefits of Island-wide composting on Martha’s Vineyard.
